JOHNSTONE – Olympic, Concert Piece – SOLO TXISTU

Other Identification:
‘Olympic’ is an extended and difficult fantasy caprice for Solo Txistu (Basque flute in F) based on the metaphysical experiences of competing at high level sporting (or other) events of a competitive nature. The work plays with two ideas: on one hand that of developing personal resilience and stamina especially as a mental exercise, easily recognizable by those sections marked with brackets and which are based on quasi modal sequences almost to the point of being perceived as a main ‘Rondo’ subject, and on the other hand numerous other passages conveying some of the ‘external’ influences upon our mental preparations and are therefore well differentiated from the main ‘personal’ motives. However the crossings from one section to another are sometimes blurred as textures transform themselves subtly and almost never in disconnected fashions.
Movements or sections:
The marking, given as “Allegro, as fast as is comfortably possible’, is very important; clarity of sound and articulation are much more important that sheer speed of execution. Also, the implied harmonic intensity and relaxation in the onward propulsion of the work might be somewhat lost at too fast a speed. Breathing points are free but should coincide with musical phrasing
Instrumentation:
Solo Txistu
Please note – this material forms the basic to the short third movement of Johnstone’s posterior Symphony-Concerto for Txistu and Orchestra!
Approximate difficulty:
Difficult.
Estrimated duration: 5′ 15″
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
With my sincere appreciation towards Raúl Madinabeitia for illustrating with such inspiration the ample possibilities of the Txistu world! He is more than worthy of such a dedication!
