JOHNSTONE – Oration – SOLO CELLO AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Oration is a medium scale work of some 10 minutes for Solo Violoncello and string orchestra. It is structurally speaking the ‘sister work’ to the composer’s Poème Élégiaque, for solo String Trio and chamber orchestra. In fact, the solo cellist has virtually identical lines in both works.
If possible, the size of the string sections should be a minimum of 6-6-4-4-2 players. All string orchestral parts are perfectly programmable for all professional orchestras, all college-conservatoire orchestras, and many stable amateur formations. The oboes and horns should be competent, for they have cantabile and penetrating lines. In the version for string trio and string orchestra, the violin and viola soloists take over much of the present wind lines, and have extra melodic interest. This alternative version is known as ‘Poème Élégiaque’.
Movements or sections:
It was written in 2009, and comprises one single movement in rhapsodic form, though one may feel that the idea of the repetition of material perhaps almost represents verses. The orchestral writing is always ‘tonal’ or ‘semi-tonal’. One might ascertain a possible similarity with some of the writing of Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams and Bloch, but one cannot call these names real ‘influences’, because the language is original ‘Johnstone’.
Instrumentation:
Soloist Cello with chamber orchestra.

Approximate difficulty:
Difficult. The soloist part shines as a soloist line, not specifically virtuosic, but always with a captivating projection. The cello soloist is the principal ‘orator’ to this creation, and he/she may be the principal cellist, or an invited soloist. As stated the part is not virtuosic but contains intervallic difficulty, high A-string passages, and a need to coax out a wonderful singing tone (suitable for professionals and music college/conservatoire students).
