A small piece that exudes great intensity and feeling, as suggested in the piece title. It is of sufficient musical interest to be played alongside other larger compositions or as an ‘encore’ by professionals, it is also well within the grasp of younger players of a medium level – thumb position is not required, though most basic combinations of diatonics and chromatics will be needed with their finger extensions.
The harmony is not specifically romantic, at least in its majority, but it is both tender and impassioned in often rather more ‘neutral’ harmonies, perhaps with a film sound track feel. The piece also offers a fair amount of flexibility and rubato, giving those soloists with imagination and feeling plenty of scope to try interesting things!

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
