JOHNSTONE – Three Miniatures – DUO OF TWO ALTO SAXOPHONES

Three small pieces, all ‘half-tonal’, which interplay the two saxophones – they are real duos which each part of the same importance.
Duration: in all, about 5 mins

Movements or sections:
No.1 – Walking to Running – A march-like piece with the feel of increasing tempo with a real gallop at the end. It is set as a canon at the major third, though is nothing ‘academic’.
No.2 – Desolation – the central slow movement shows profundity and certain desperation of feeling with a gentle ending.
No.3 – Caprice Miniature – An encore piece, which shows the more virtuosic aspect of the saxophone. Both parts generally imitate each other. It contains Bartok and Prokofiev influences.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
