Ernst Krenek was an Austrian composer active in the 20th century who worked in Germany and the United States. He studied composition under Franz Schreker and was influenced by counterpoint and extended tonality early in his career. Krenek wrote in a wide variety of styles throughout his life, gaining success for works like the opera Jonny spielt auf in the 1920s. He emigrated to the US in 1938 to escape the Nazis and had a long teaching career, remaining a prolific composer into the 1960s and experimenting with serialism and electronic music.
