LISZT – Ave Maris Stella – 8 CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:
Franz Liszt composed several versions of “Ave Maris Stella,” a traditional Latin prayer dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Liszt wrote two versions for mixed or male choirs, accompanied by organ or harmonium. The Latin title translates to “Hail, Star of the Sea” – the plainsong version of the hymn is believed to date back to the 8th century.

The present piece is numbered ‘S34/1’ and was composed in 1865 or 1866. There might appear to be contradictions between Liszt’s perceived lifestyle and his inner devout intentions – however, his letters reveal a deeply thoughtful and complex man, whose religious sensibilities should be taken seriously.
