MASCAGNI – Intermezzo (from the opera ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’) – 6 CELLOS OR CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The “Intermezzo” from Pietro Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria rusticana is a famous instrumental piece played between two dramatic scenes on Easter morning. It is built on a beautiful melody derived from a hymn heard earlier in the village church.

It opens with a serene, hymn-like melody and is notable for its emotional depth, conveying a mix of peace, longing, and the intense, tragic feelings of the characters within the story. The music contrasts with the violence and passion of the opera, which is a story of love, betrayal, and honour among Sicilian peasants.

It is considered one of the most beautiful melodies in all of opera and is often played separately as a concert piece.
