MASSENET – Meditation (from the opera ‘Thäis’) – SOLO CELLO AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
One of the most magnificent romantic melodies ever composed!

The “Méditation” from Jules Massenet’s opera Thaïs is a famous instrumental interlude performed after a monk, Athanaël, tries to convince the courtesan Thaïs to renounce her life of pleasure for a spiritual one. The piece is a contemplative and spiritual moment that follows this intense encounter, as Thaïs contemplates the monk’s words. It is often performed as a standalone concert piece, though it originated as an entr’acte in the opera’s second act.

The piece is originally for solo violin and orchestra, with a wordless chorus joining in during the final reprise. Concert performance: The “Méditation” is frequently performed as a separate piece in concert halls, and in many different versions and arrangements.
