MENDELSSOHN – Psalm 100 (1844) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Felix Mendelssohn’s composition of Psalm 100, titled ‘Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt’ (Praise the Lord, all the World), is a radiant, C major work from 1844, written for four-part mixed choir with small orchestra. Although debated whether it was intended for a Jewish or Protestant service, later evidence points to a commission for the Berlin Cathedral. The piece features dynamic contrasts, a homophonic texture, and an alternation between tutti and solo parts.
Movements or sections:
One movement with three sections marked by different tempos: Andante con moto, Poco lento, and Andante
Instrumentation: OCTET OF EIGHT CELLOS
Prepared by David Johnstone
