MENDELSSOHN_Schellong – Cantata ‘Verleih uns Frieden’ (1831) – 12 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Mendelssohn’s ‘Verleih uns Frieden’ is a short, one-movement choral cantata for mixed choir and orchestra, composed in 1831. It is set to Martin Luther’s German translation of the Latin antiphon Da pacem, Domine, a prayer for peace. The piece is known for its imaginative orchestration, particularly a prominent cello part, and its structure of the text being presented three times, each with increasing vocal complexity: basses alone, altos with bass counterpoint, and finally a four-part harmony.
Movements or sections:
An instrumental introduction is followed by a quiet, contemplative first verse sung by the basses alone. The same text is repeated a second time, the altos taking up the melody while the basses sing a counter-melody. The third verse opens up into a four-part harmonisation, using the full forces to express a sanguine hope for peace.
