MONTEVERDI – Toccata (from the Opera L’Orfeo) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
The Toccata from Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo is a powerful, fanfare-like instrumental introduction composed by Claudio Monteverdi in 1607 to signal the beginning of the performance. This piece, a precursor to the modern overture (even, perhaps, the first overture in the history of opera!), uses trumpets and other instruments to create excitement and announce the mythological story of Orfeo, who attempts to retrieve his lost love Eurydice from the Underworld. The piece was intended to be played three times for the audience, building tension with each repetition.
