MOZART – Adagio K356 (1791) – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Mozart’s Adagio in C major, K. 356 is a late composition written in 1791 originally written for the glass harmonica. It is a short, slow piece that is often also performed on other instruments, such as the piano, organ, or even the guitar. It is considered an example of Mozart’s mature style. It is often mentioned alongside the Adagio and Rondo, K. 617, which was also composed in 1791 for the glass harmonica and is a rather more extensive work.
Despite efforts to give it prominence was only a passing vogue. Among the last to write for it was the French composer Hector Berlioz in his 1830 orchestral fantasia on Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’.
