MOZART – Ave Verum Corpus, K.618 – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Mozart’s Ave verum corpus, K. 618, is a short, D major motet composed in June 1791 for his friend Anton Stoll, the choirmaster in Baden, to be performed on the feast of Corpus Christi. It is a musical setting of a 14th-century Eucharistic hymn that translates to “Hail, True Body” and reflects on the body of Christ, the sacrament of the Eucharist. Scored for four-part choir (SATB), strings, and organ, the 46-bar work is known for its gentle, serene, and simple yet profound character, intended for a small-town choir. It was one of Mozart’s final compositions, written while he was also working on The Magic Flute and shortly before his death.
