MOZART – Clarinet Adagio (from the Clarinet Concerto), K.622 – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, was completed in October 1791 for the clarinettist Anton Stadler. It consists of three movements, in a fast–slow–fast succession:
Allegro (in A major and in sonata form)
Adagio (in D major and in ternary form)
Rondo: Allegro (in A major)

The work was completed a few weeks before the composer’s death. It was to be his last completed work, and has been described as his swan-song.
Movements or sections:
The second movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto (K. 622) is a famous Adagio in rounded binary (A-B-A) form, in D major, and is known for its serene beauty and operatic quality. It features the solo clarinet introducing a long, lyrical theme which is then repeated and developed by the orchestra, followed by a central section with rich solo ornamentation, and finally a return of the opening theme with a concluding coda.
