MOZART – Rondo alla Turca (from Piano Sonata No.11, K331) – TWO CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:
The “Rondo alla Turca”, also known as the “Turkish March”, is the third and final movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331. It is officially titled “Alla turca” and was composed around 1783, imitating the sound of the marching bands of the Ottoman Janissaries, which were very popular in Europe at the time. The piece is known for its rhythmic military style and is one of Mozart’s most famous melodies.
Movements or sections:
It features a martial rhythm, a rondo structure, and a style that imitates the music of Ottoman bands.

This two cello arrangement deals only with the principal theme; but this is shared almost equally between both parts, or rather they both ‘play with’ the theme, making it a feeling of a real duo for two instruments.
Instrumentation: DUO OF TWO CELLOS (easy)
Arranged by David Johnstone

1 PDF, with both score and parts
Approximate difficulty: EASY
Technically the music rises to only the cello third position, making it suitable for players of few years’ experience. More importantly perhaps to note, it is important not to use much bow on the semi-quavers (eighth-notes) so as not to lose the speed and propulsion.
