MUSSORGSKY – Night on a Bare Mountain (1867) – CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
A Night on Bare Mountain is an orchestral tone poem by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, inspired by a Russian folktale about a witches’ sabbath on St. John’s Night. The chaotic and frenzied piece was originally completed in 1867 but was not publicly performed in his lifetime. Its most famous version is the one used in Disney’s 1940 animated film, Fantasia.
Mussorgsky wrote several versions but had difficulty getting the work performed during his lifetime. After Mussorgsky’s death, Rimsky-Korsakov revised and re-orchestrated the work, and it was first performed successfully in 1886.
