NAVARRE-BASQUE traditional – Melody ‘Nere Maitea’ – SOLO CELLO

Other Identification: The music originates from Baraibar, a small village in the foothills of the Aralar mountain range in the north of Navarra. Nere Maitea is in the Basque language and means “My beloved”. It speaks of a husband-to-be allaying his bride’s fears as to how they might struggle in their forthcoming lifestyle together as a couple, through a lack of commodities.
Also to be noted is that a highly virtuoso work constructed on this melody and titled “FANTASY VARIATIONS SOBRE ‘NERE MAITEA’ PARA SOLO CELLO” has been composed by David Johnstone – this ten-minute work is dedicated to the memory of English cellist Cyril Gibson.
