Ottokar Novacek was born at Weißkirchen (Serbian: Bela Crkva), southern Austrian Empire (today Serbia). He studied successfully with his father Martin Joseph Nováèek, with Jakob Dont in Vienna (1880–83), and with Henry Schradieck and Brodsky at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he won the Mendelssohn Prize in 1885. He played in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and in the Brodsky Quartet, originally as second violin and later as viola.
He subsequently immigrated to the USA, where he was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Arthur Nikisch (1891) and was appointed principal viola in the Damrosch Orchestra, New York (1892-3). He also played in the re-formed Brodsky Quartet.
In 1899, after a heart condition forced him to retire from playing, he devoted himself to composition. His works include a piano concerto (1894, dedicated to, and first performed by, Ferruccio Busoni), Perpetuum mobile (Perpetual Motion) for violin and orchestra or piano (1895), three string quartets (published in 1890, 1898 and 1904), eight Concerto caprices and other works for violin and piano (including the 8 Bulgarian Dances), and six songs to texts by Leo Tolstoy. He died in New York City.

The 8 Bulgarian dances are delightful pieces, and I would purposefully say ‘pieces’ rather than ‘dances’ for he has crafted these miniatures into melodic creative impulses rather than concentrating on the purely rhythmical aspects; however the last two pieces in each book (that is, 4 and 8) do exude certain virtuosism. A very welcome musical addition to repertoire for cellists from a region that has perhaps been unjustly overlooked by the more common Hungarian and Rumanian folk music.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
