OVALLE – Song ‘Azulao’ – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Jaime Ovalle, born in Belem do Pará in 1894 was a Brazilian composer and poet. He was self-taught as a composer. As an officer of the Ministério da Fazenda, he resided mostly in New York and London. He was one of the “Second Nationalist Generation” of Brazilian composers along with Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez (1897-1948) and Walter Burle-Marx (1902-1990). He died in 1955.

Ovalle’s best known song is Azulão, (“bluebird”), a canção to a text by Manuel Bandeira. It has been recorded by many great artists. Johnstone has made two adaptations of the song, both to be found in Johnstone-Music. The first adds a cello solo to the original voice and piano to become a trio. Using this new trio score as a base he also produces THIS setting for FOUR CELLOS which makes a rich concert setting for medium and advanced cellists.
