Jaime Ovalle, born in Belem do Pará in 1894 was a Brazilian composer and poet. He was self-taught as a composer. As an officer of the Ministério da Fazenda, he resided mostly in New York and London. He was one of the “Second Nationalist Generation” of Brazilian composers along with Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez (1897-1948) and Walter Burle-Marx (1902-1990). He died in 1955.

Ovalle’s best known song is Azulão, (“bluebird”), a canção to a text by Manuel Bandeira. It has been recorded by many great artists. Johnstone has made two adaptations of the song, both to be found in Johnstone-Music. The first adds a cello solo to the original voice and piano to become a trio. Using this new trio score as a base he also produces a setting for 4 Cellos. Both settings make for a rich concert setting for medium and advanced cellists.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
