Padre Donostia, whose real name was José Gonzalo Zulaica, was a Basque priest, musicologist, and composer (1886-1943) known for collecting and arranging Basque popular music and folk elements, often blending them with Gregorian chant. He is celebrated for works such as the Basque Preludes for piano and his contributions to Basque choral music, including the Missa pro defunctis. He lived in exile in France from 1936 to 1943.
