POPPER – Hungarian Rhapsody, Op.68 – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
I was asked several times over the past few years about the possibility of a cello ensemble playing the work instead of the piano accompaniment. It is true that Popper had himself orchestrated this work, but in the reality of 21st century concert programming it is very difficult to find an orchestra willing to advertise a soloist cello work of under 10 minutes duration; therefore, this cello quartet version may be seen as a “halfway” house. Indeed, it could be perfectly well played by an orchestra of cellists who divide themselves between the Cello II, Cello III and Cello IV parts.
Movements or sections:
The individual movements/sections are:
Andante maestoso – Cadenza – Andante – Presto – Adagio – Allegro vivace
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Also possible with cello soloist accompanied by a larger cello ensemble/Cello orchestra
Although the first cello – the ‘star’ – will shine brilliantly as a virtuoso soloist this is none-the-less a carefully worked transcription bringing a real sense of chamber music to a cello quartet; obviously all parts are essential!
Please use the piano part as a score guide – this has the rehearsal numbers added of the cello quartet parts
Approximate difficulty:
Difficult
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
This arrangement: Spainsh cellists Brian Fasla and Irene Ansó
