POPULAR Song Miniature (old French) – For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow – FOUR CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:
“For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow” is a popular congratulatory song on an old French melody, The melody originated in France around 1709, following the Battle of Malplaquet, and was originally titled “Malbrough s’en va-t-en guerre”.

It became a popular folk tune after being popularized by Queen Marie Antoinette, who had heard a maid singing it. The tune then travelled to England, where new, celebratory lyrics were added to it by the mid-19th century, becoming a popular song. It spread globally – the song was adopted in America soon after and also other English-speaking countries of the empire, evolving into its well-known form today.

It is sung to celebrate achievements and significant life events like birthdays, promotions, or weddings. There are slightly different versions; the British version typically ends with “And so say all of us,” while the American version commonly uses “Which nobody can deny”.
