PURCELL-CLARKE – Trumpet Tune – FOUR CELLOS (OR CELLO ORCHESTRA)

Other Identification:
The famous Trumpet Tune in D is incorrectly attributed to Henry Purcell but, rather like the ‘Albinoni’ Adagio, it seems to have stuck with a wrong name. So from where does this melody really come from then? It was taken from the semi-opera “The Island Princess”, which was a joint musical production of Clarke and Daniel Purcell. Daniel was Purcell’s younger brother, supposedly easily leading to the confusion.
Movements or sections:
In binary form, marked ‘Maestoso’
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Also very useful for larger cello ensembles or cello orchestra
….
2 PDFs, one of the score, and the other with all parts.
Approximate difficulty:
Easy to medium
However you wish to programme it it is an effective number for cello ensembles, either for four solo cellists or for cello orchestra. In spite of the higher register of the first part it is actually quite comfortable to play!
