RACHMANINOV – Vocalise, Op.34 No.14 – 6 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise,” Op. 34, No. 14, is a wordless song composed in 1915 for high voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment. It is the last of his 14 Songs, Op. 34, and is notable for its lack of text, with the melody sung on a single, chosen vowel. The song’s beautiful, haunting melody conveys deep emotion and has led to numerous instrumental and orchestral arrangements, which are often performed more frequently than the original vocal version.
Movements or sections:
The song features two parts that are repeated, giving it a duration of about seven minutes in its original form. The opening phrase has a connection to the Dies irae (Day of Wrath) theme, which was a recurring motif for Rachmaninoff.

SEXTET OF SIX CELLOS
Arranged by DAvid Johnstone
