RIMSKY-KORSAKOV – Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H – TRIO VIOLIN, VIOLA AND CELLO

Other Identification:
Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 – 1908) was a Russian composer, a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration.

His best-known orchestral compositions – Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade – are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas. Scheherazade is an example of his frequent use of fairy-tale and folk subjects.

Movements or sections:
The Prelude and Fugue on the letters “B-A-C-H” of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 – 1908) were the 5th and 6th pieces from a set of 6 solo piano pieces, all based on these four letters (remember that B in German is Bb, and H is B natural!).

Here are all six titles:
1. Valse (Вальс). Adagio a piacere – Molto moderato
2. Intermezzo (Интермеццо). Allegro molto
3. Scherzo (Скерцо). Vivo
4. Nocturne (Ноктюрн). Andante con espressione
5. Prelude (Прелюдия). Allegretto
6. Fugue (Фуга). Allegro moderato

The advanced harmonic writing is ahead of its time; here, an already mature 34-year-old Rimsky-Korsakov was looking towards the future! This work is not easy, but makes for a lovely concert piece in the capable hands of a good string trio.
