‘Scheherazade’ is the legendary Persian queen and storyteller from One Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights). She marries a vengeful Sultan who beheads his brides each morning, and she saves her life by telling him captivating stories each night, pausing at a cliffhanger to make him wait for the conclusion. This continues for 1,001 nights, during which the Sultan falls in love with her and spares her life.

“The Young Prince and the Young Princess” is the third movement of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade, which is inspired by The Arabian Nights. The movement is known for its romantic, song-like melody, with a graceful, melancholic main theme and a simple, elegant structure. It depicts a story of the young prince and princess, with a lyrical quality that has made it a popular and recognizable part of the work.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
