RIMSKY-KORSAKOV_Chris_Hill – Scheherazade, Op.35 [Movement III – ‘The Young Prince and the Young Princess’] – 6 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Scheherezade (Op. 35) is a large symphonic suite written in 1888 by Rimsky-Korsakov. Based on ‘One Thousand and One Nights’, this work combinates two features typical of both Russian music and Rimksy-Korsakov: a colourful, powerful orchestration and an interest in eastern themes. It is considered to be his most popular work. Though the composer intended to name the movements as Prelude, Ballade, Adagio and Finale he ended setting for programmatic titles, albeit vague ones, so that no connection could be made to specific tales. In later additions he did away with the titles altogether, though they still remain in common use.

The reasons for its popularity are clear: it is a score replete with orchestral colours, fresh and piquant melodies, with a mild oriental flavour, a rhythmic vitality largely absent from many major orchestral works of the later 19th century, and a directness of expression unhampered by quasi-symphonic complexities of texture and structure.

Movements or sections:
“The Young Prince and the Young Princess” is the third movement (of a total of four) of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade, which is based on the tales from One Thousand and One Nights. This movement, identified by its romantic and sentimental melody, describes a love story between a young prince and princess, inspired by an oriental garden scene. The movement’s main theme is introduced by the violins and creates a longing, nostalgic feeling through its harmonies.

The music reflects the overall theme of the Scheherazade suite, which is to tell the stories of One Thousand and One Nights to a jealous Sultan. The movement represents one of the tales Scheherazade tells.
