ROSE, Peter de – Fantasy on ‘Deep Purple’ (film melody) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
‘Deep Purple’ was written by composer Peter De Rose as a piano solo in 1934, gradually arriving at being his biggest hit. In 1935 it was arranged by Domenico Savino and introduced by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra on radio. Sheet music sales were brisk, leading Mitchell Parish to add lyrics in 1938, but the song didnt achieve universal popularity until 1939 when Mitchell Parish added the lyric. “Deep Purple” is very popular again among gypsy style musicians.

More recent notable revivals have been by Nino Tempo & April Stevens (1963), Donny & Marie Osmond (1975), Ray Stevens (1985), The Beach Boys (1977), and Ingrid Lucia (2004).

An important anecdote: The British rock band DEEP PURPLE took their name from Pete De Rose’s hit, as it was the favourite song of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore’s grandmother, who was able to play the song on piano. However, the band has never recorded or even performed the song!
