ROSSINI – Duo in D Major (1824) – DUO CELLO AND DOUBLE BASS

Other Identification:
Gioachino Rossini’s Duetto for cello and double bass is a rare and delightful chamber work, composed in 1824 while he was in London. Written for the amateur double bass player Philip Joseph Salomons, it was likely first performed by the virtuoso double bassist Domenico Dragonetti and a cellist in a London salon. The three-movement piece is a charming and virtuosic work, often performed despite its unusual instrumentation.
Movements or sections: The work has three movements:

1 – First movement: Allegro An introductory movement that is animated, witty, and reveals the virtuosity of both instruments.

2 – Second movement: Andante molto A soulful, lyrical movement with a dramatic swell.

3 – Finale: Allegro A triumphant and virtuosic movement that showcases the capability of the cello and double bass to produce a wide range of music.
Instrumentation: DUO OF CELLO AND DOUBLE BASS
It is considered a gem, surprising listeners with the rich, new world of color and tone that the combination of the two instruments can produce.
