Camille Saint-Saëns’s Allegro appassionato, Op. 43, is a popular and virtuosic Romantic piece for cello and piano, composed in 1873 and orchestrated in 1876, known for its “gypsy” feel and passionate character. The work, dedicated to cellist Jules Lasserre, is now a standard in the cello repertoire, significantly promoted by Pablo Casals in the early 20th century.

Allegro appassionato translates to “fast and passionate”. The piece has a “gypsy feel” to its main theme and exhibits a “scherzo-form” structure, with two lyrical interludes breaking up the fast-paced material.

Approximate difficulty:
DIFFICULT
This should perhaps be undertaken by fairly competent cellists – perhaps music college and upwards – the necessary precision for cellos II to V is quite demanding!
