Camille Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise, Op. 83, is a virtuoso piece for violin and orchestra (or piano) in E major, written in 1887 and dedicated to Cuban violinist Rafael Díaz Albertini. The work was very well received from its initial publication in 1888. The work is known for its brilliant, effective, and virtuosic violin part, which is framed by lyrical melodies and pervaded by the characteristic habanera rhythm.
Movements or sections:
In one movement – originally for violin and piano, later orchestrated by the composer. Inspired by the habanera rhythm of Cuban-Spanish dance music, the piece was composed after Saint-Saëns was inspired by the sound of a crackling fire in a hotel while touring with Albertini.
