“Auld Lang Syne” is a 1788 poem by the Scottish poet Robert Burns, which became a folk song meaning “for old times’ sake” or “long ago.” It is traditionally sung at the end of the new year, to remember old friendships and occasions, and to wish for a continued friendship. The song is a celebration of memory and friendship, and is sung around the world at solemn events such as weddings and funerals, as well as at New Year’s Eve celebrations.
