SIBELIUS – Nocturne, Op.51 No.3 (1907/1911) – SOLO CELLO (OR VIOLIN) AND STRING ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Sibelius’s “Nocturne,” Op. 51, is the third movement of the orchestral suite from his incidental music for the play Belshazzar’s Feast. Composed in 1906-07, the suite is based on the biblical story of Belshazzar’s downfall. The Nocturne was originally a song, “The Jewish Girl’s Song” (“Den judiska flickans sång”), sung by the homesick character Leschanah (who longs for Jerusalem), as a piece for voice and orchestra. Sibelius orchestrated it for the suite to depict the quiet, star-filled night in the play.
Movements or sections:
Sibelius later arranged this music as a song for voice and piano in the same year he created the suite. A version for violin and piano was published in 1911, but this appears to not be the work of Sibelius – a violinist himself – but of Michael Press.
