SMETANA – Polka in C Major – TWO CELLOS AND PIANO

Other Identification:
Bedřich Smetana occupies an important place in the development of musical nationalism in his native Bohemia, where he was born in 1824, the son of a brewmaster in the service of Count Waldstein and others. His career was interrupted by a period of self-imposed exile in Sweden after the political disappointments that followed the turmoil of 1848. Smetana played a decisive role in establishing Czech national opera and a Czech national style, particularly in his symphonic poems. Despite developing deafness, he continued composing, and this would become an autobiographical element evident in his string quartets.

For Smetana, the polka is a compositional form similar to what the polonaise or mazurka is for Chopin, or the waltz for the Strauss family. The artistic stylization of the polka interested the composer from his earliest compositional efforts, and he would return to it in his mature works.
