SQUIRE, W.H. – Tarantella, Op.23 – 6 CELLOS or CELLO SOLOIST WITH CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The Tarantella of William Henry Squire was once a much-performed delightful small concert piece, originally composed for cello and piano – published as Opus 23 of this famous historical English cellist. It seems to be coming back into fashion of late, no doubt being popular for the very ‘comfortable’ virtuoso writing – the soloist has just one excursion into thumb position (which again repeats in the last section) otherwise 5th/6th position are the limits. With a cello orchestra backing us I feel it helps the cause and gives the work a more grandiose effect!
Movements or sections:
Tarantella in ternary form (A – B – A)
Instrumentation:
SEXTET OF SIX CELLOS or ONE CELLO SOLOIST ACCOMPANIED BY A CELLO ORCHESTRA
Arranged by David Johnstone

2 PDFs:
[1 – Cellos 1 to 3
[]2 – Cellos 4 to 6

No score has been produced for this arrangement – everything should be quite clear from the piano accompaniment as to how are the sonorities. It is quite possible for a conductor to use the piano part in order to conduct a performance.
Approximate difficulty:
In this version the cello orchestral writing has been carefully graded this way:
Cello I – is our cello soloist. It should be played by ONE musician, not doubled up as like the other parts can be. Of course, he/she plays the original cello part of Squire …
Cello II – will include passages in Q position, but generally comfortable and with the Q sitting on the harmonics …
Cello III – does not use Q position, but it will take cellists up to a maximum of 6th and 7th position (this rarely!)
Cello IV – Only uses writing that goes no further than 4th position
Cello V – This part uses only 1st position, but within first position does include extensions of the first and fourth fingers
Cello VI – This part also uses only the first position, and there are no extensions present, so ideal for first ventures into a cello orchestra!
