STRAUSS, Johann (Sr) – Radetzky March – 5 CELLOS OR CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The “Radetzky March” is a famous orchestral piece composed by Johann Strauss I (Senior) in 1848 (and first performed in Vienna on August 31st of the same year) to honor the military victories of Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, particularly at the Battle of Custoza. Its celebratory nature and upbeat tempo, featuring a well-known folk tune in the trio, have made it a beloved and recognizable work.

A tradition developed during its first performance, with Austrian officers clapping and stomping their feet in appreciation. This evolved into the modern tradition of audience members clapping along during the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, creating a festive and interactive atmosphere, where it serves as a rousing traditional finale.
