The cello was surely Sullivan’s favourite instrument and he possessed a cello. His brother Frederic played the cello semi-professionally. Sullivan only concerto was for the cello.
His Duo Concertante, an impressive recital work, dated from 1868, and was also for the cello. The work bursts with melody and boasts a marvellous interplay between the instruments which the title of the work suggests, and one can clearly see the influence of earlier romantic composers, and especially Mendelssohn.
Movements or sections:
Although it is in one movement, there are two clear sections. It begins with a bold Andante and is followed by an extended Allegro moderato.
