TANEYEV – ‘From Medieval Life’ – CELLO AND PIANO (easy)

Other Identification:
Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev (Russian: Серге́й Ива́нович Тане́ев; 1856 – 1915) was a Russian composer, pianist, teacher of composition, music theorist and author. Taneyev’s specialized field of study was counterpoint.
Taneyev became the most trusted musician among Tchaikovsky’s friends. He was the soloist at the Moscow première of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto in December 1875. Taneyev served as Director of the Moscow Conservatory from 1885 to 1889.
The present song is an early piece; Taneyev probably composed it when he was around 20 years old. Not much is known about it, and was not even published until 1979. It is set in F Major, and now given the reference IST 13. The poem is set in Russian, and originally (of course) for voice and piano.

Approximate difficulty:
As a small concert piece for cello it makes for an ideal way to first get to know and use 2nd, 3rd and 4th position – there is a sense of comfort within a straightforward rhythm (nearly all are 4th notes and 8th notes!) to get to hear the position changes, and the simple backing harmony on piano is a great check for cellists to double up on this ‘ear check’. Perhaps the writing might be classed as of around Grade 3 level of the British Royal Schools of Music syllabus, and certainly well within ‘Grado Elemental’ of the Spanish educational system.
