TARTINI – 50 Variations on a theme of Corelli [Art of Bowing – adapted for CELLO]

Other Identification:
Giuseppe Tartini’s 50 Variations on a Gavotte by Corelli, also known as L’arte dell’arco (The Art of the Bow), is a composition from 1720 featuring 50 variations on a theme from Arcangelo Corelli’s Sonata Op. 5 No. 10.
The variations are a showcase of 18th-century violin bowing techniques. The original work is for solo violin, but transcriptions for violin and piano, or cello, or cello and piano, are widely performed and even recorded.
They are designed to be almost an encyclopedia of bowing studies, and has its fame for its comprehensive exploration of 18th-century bowing techniques.
Different transcriptions exist, often adding piano accompaniment, including versions by Ferdinand David, Zino Francescatti, and a piano-accompanied version by Fritz Kreisler.
