The “Andante” in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique, is not a standalone movement but a section within the symphony’s first movement, “Adagio – Allegro non troppo”. It is a beautiful and melancholic melody that is often described as providing a moment of consolation after a more gloomy opening. The Pathétique Symphony was Tchaikovsky’s last completed work, composed in 1893, and is characterized by its deep emotional intensity.
This melody is often described as a message of consolation or a brief respite from the symphony’s overall darker tone.

Movements or sections:
Some theories suggest the melody was based on a folk song that Tchaikovsky heard whistled by a painter at his sister’s house.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
