TCHAIKOVSKY – Song ‘None but the Lonely Heart’ – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed, towards the end of 1869, a set of six romances for voice and piano, Op. 6; the last of these songs is the melancholy “None but the Lonely Heart”. It is a setting of Lev Mei’s poem “The Harpist’s Song,” and this in turn was translated from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship.
Movements or sections:
This song was also formerly known in England as “None but the Aching Heart”, a title that Johnstone prefers, showing perhaps better the anguish in the singing line.
Instrumentation:
FIVE CELLOS, OR LARGER CELLO ENSEMBLE
Arranged by David Johnstone

2 PDFs:
1] – General Score
2] – All individual parts
Approximate difficulty:
The usual line-up in this present arrangement of David Johnstone will probably be by five solo cellists, but it is also feasible for Cello Orchestra – in this case Cello I is to be played by only one performer and the other parts are to be divided up and ‘divisi’ employed where possible for comfort of left-hand fingerings.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
Tchaikovsky dedicated this piece to Alina Khvostova.

The song was premiered in Moscow in 1870 by the Russian mezzo-soprano Yelizaveta Lavrovskaya. This was followed the following year with a second performance in St. Petersburg during an all-Tchaikovsky concert hosted by Nikolai Rubinstein; this was coincidentally the FIRST concert ever devoted entirely to Tchaikovsky’s works!
