TCHAIKOVSKY – the ‘1812 Overture’ Op.49 (1880) – CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The 1812 Overture, Op. 49, is a concert overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, written in 1880 to commemorate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s invading French forces in 1812. Composed in just six weeks, it is famous for its use of military artillery, cannon fire, and both French and Russian musical themes. It incorporates the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” to represent the invading French, and uses themes from Russian hymns and folk songs.

It is specially famous for its dramatic finale, which includes the sound of cannon fire. Tchaikovsky reportedly disliked the piece, calling it “very loud and noisy and completely without artistic merit,” yet it became immensely popular!
