TCHAIKOVSKY – Themes from the ‘Symphonie Pathetique’ – 12 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the “Pathétique,” is his final symphony, composed in 1893 and premiered just days before his death. It is known for its emotional depth, with a unique and somber structure that ends not with a triumph, but a quiet, fading silence. The symphony’s name was initially intended to be “Passionate Symphony” (from the Russian patetitcheskaja), but a mistranslation led to the more melancholic “Pathétique” title, meaning “evoking pity”.
Movements or sections:
in Rhapsodic nature
Instrumentation:
ENSEMBLE OF 12 CELLOS
Arranged by David Johnstone

This music is in 5 PDFs:
[1 – General Score
[2 – Cellos 1 to 3
[3 – Cellos 4 to 6
[4 – Cellos 7 to 9
[5 – Cellos 10 to 12
Approximate difficulty:
MEDIUM to DIFFICULT
The individual parts are not at all hard (except perhaps Cello 1); the difficulty comes from rehearsal of everyone together. This makes for excellent chamber music practice on a large scale – every part is absolutely vital! A most rewarding experience in public performance …
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
Deryn Cullen (South African – British cellist)
