TCHAIKOVSKY – Zemfira’s Song – SIX CELLOS

Other Identification:
Zemfira’s Song is one of Tchaikovsky’s earliest compositions. Nothing is known about the process of composition. The work was only discovered after Tchaikovsky’s death, in the form of a manuscript copy of the score made by Karl Albrecht. For many years the song was only known in the version edited by Karl Albrecht, until Tchaikovsky’s original score was rediscovered. It is scored for medium or high voice with piano accompaniment.
Movements or sections:
There is one movement: Allegro non tanto (A minor, 26 bars). The words are by Aleksandr Pushkin (1799–1837), from his 1824 poem The Gypsie. The copy is longer than the original and the changes were probably introduced under Tchaikovsky.
Instrumentation:
SEXTET OF SIX CELLOS
Arranged by David Johnstone

2 PDFs:
1] – General Score
2] – All individual parts
Approximate difficulty:
The cello version for six instrumentalists follows the longer scheme; however we are still only talking about a miniature lasting around some two minutes in performance. However the A minor key is ideal for cello ensemble, with the first cello – playing the vocal line – in a glorious register. It is not difficult for the other parts though all should feel the energy that is unleashed in this work.
