VERDI – ‘Libera Me’ (from the Requiem) – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Libera me” is the concluding movement of Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, a powerful setting of the Catholic Mass for the Dead premiered in 1874 to honor Alessandro Manzoni. The movement’s text is a prayer for deliverance from eternal death at the Last Judgment, featuring a dramatic soprano solo followed by a combined Gregorian chant and Baroque fugue that builds to a terrifying climax before concluding with a plea for eternal rest. Originally composed for a collaborative Requiem for Rossini, Verdi adapted and expanded this movement to become the final, emotionally charged section of his own Messa da Requiem.
Movements or sections:
The movement begins with a haunting soprano solo, where the soloist pleads, “Libera me, Domine” (“Deliver me, O Lord”), begging to be saved from eternal death and the fiery judgment. This is the music offered here for FIVE CELLOS.

The music then shifts to a complex, four-part fugue for the chorus and orchestra, blending elements of Gregorian chant with the intricate structures of Baroque counterpoint.

The movement builds to a tumultuous, apocalyptic climax before ultimately falling back, concluding with a haunting, austere prayer for eternal rest.
