The Pater Noster, meaning “Our Father” in Latin, is the Christian Lord’s Prayer, a central Christian prayer taught by Jesus to his disciples. It is also known as the Our Father and can be found in the New Testament gospels of Matthew and Luke.
Verdi’s Pater Noster, a five-part unaccompanied choral work composed in 1873, is part of his Quattro pezzi sacri and sets the Latin text of the Lord’s Prayer to music that transitions from devotional stillness to operatic drama. The piece, considered moderately difficult, is known for its rich harmony and dramatic contrasts, featuring an English translation by Brian Trowell in the scholarly edition published by Oxford University Press.
