VERDI – Rigoletto’s Aria (from Act II of the opera ‘Rigoletto’) – 6 CELLOS

Other Identification:
In Act II of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Rigoletto discovers his daughter, Gilda, has been seduced by the Duke and is devastated by the realization of the Count Monterone’s curse coming true. He initially expresses violent rage towards the courtiers who facilitated the seduction, but this soon turns to a desperate, tender plea for Gilda’s return. Gilda then enters, revealing the Duke’s courtship and abduction to her father, who swears revenge for the humiliation.

The famous aria, “La donna è mobile” (often translated as “A woman is fickle”), is sung by the Duke in this act, though it occurs earlier in the opera before the main events of Act II, within the first scene of the opera. Verdi’s use of linking recitative and aria without a pause was innovative and marked a departure from traditional opera structure.

The act sets the stage for the tragic events that follow, as Rigoletto’s thirst for revenge becomes a central theme.
