VIERNE, Louis – Symphonic Poem ‘Eros’, Op.37 (1916) – ORCHESTRA WITH SOLO CELLO OBLIGATO

Other Identification:
‘Eros’, Op. 37, is a symphonic poem by French composer Louis Vierne, written for solo voice and orchestra (or piano) in 1916, based on a poem by Anna Comtesse de Noailles. It is one of four such works (alongside ‘Psyché’, ‘Les Djinns’, and ‘Ballade du désespéré’) that capture Vierne’s personal tragedies and is known for its pagan sensuality and hot, oppressive atmosphere, reflecting the text’s themes.
Movements or sections:
A symphonic poem, rather more complicated than a single song.
Instrumentation:
Originally for solo voice and orchestra, but transcribed for voice and piano by the composer.

Approximate difficulty:
CELLO OBLIGATO – difficult

Extra considerations:
** it is suggested that the soloist cellist ‘obligato’ be seated as principal cellist with an individual stand (with the second stand having players 2 and 3).
** in certain places (marked in the soloist part) it is advised for the soloist to play the orchestral cello part (even though the original vocal soloist does not do this).
** this version should almost exclusively be used with orchestra; there is an existing reduction for piano, and even with organ accompaniment, but it is felt that these are less effective when featuring a cello soloist, and also that the exquisite orchestral colourings with a solo cello would be partially lost.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
This new presentation of the symphonic poem is affectively dedicated to the fine Spanish cellist Eros Jaca.
