VIVALDI – Double Cello Concerto in G minor – 2 SOLO CELLOS, WITH CELLO TRIO OR CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor, RV 531, is his only concerto for two cellos, composed around the 1720s. It is a three-movement work featuring two solo cellos, a string orchestra, and basso continuo, notable for its innovative beginning with the soloists alone and its dramatic, conversational first movement and intimate, operatic second movement.

Vivaldi wrote concertos for various solo instruments for the orphan girls at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. It is likely that this concerto was composed for one of Vivaldi’s cello virtuoso friends or for the orphan girls.
Movements or sections:
First Movement (Allegro):
Characterized by a vigorous, engaging dialogue between the two solo cellos, often described as being in “thirds”. The work begins with the two solo cellos entering alone, establishing their prominence.

Second Movement (Largo):
A melancholy, operatic duet with an intimate feel, often noted for its tender qualities and beauty.

Third Movement (Allegro):
Features a lively, buoyant orchestral opening followed by equally rich and spirited playing from the soloists.
Instrumentation:
TWO CELLO SOLOISTS, ACCOMPANIED BY A TRIO OF CELLOS OR BY A LARGER CELLO ENSEMBLE/ORCHESTRA
Arranged by David Johnstone
